Named Tunnell Trust Young Artist 2023, and recipient of both the 2022 Parikian Award and the Royal Academy of Music’s Regency Award, Scottish violinist Daniel Stroud is fast gaining recognition for his captivating performances and playing. Daniel is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player and his is artistic mission is to bring sincerity and passion to every performance he gives. His exciting musical career has has led him to perform at some of the UK’s most renowned venues, including The Barbican, The Royal Albert Hall and the V&A Museum.
The 2023/24 season has been a significant period for Daniel, featuring a diverse array of performances across the UK and Europe. As a winner of the Tunnell Trust, he returned to Scotland for a recital tour with pianist Hanzhi Zhang, performing in Skye, Nairn, Perth, and Edinburgh. Their program celebrated the works of MacMillan, Mozart, Brahms, Strauss, and Ravel, offering audiences a rich musical journey through these masterworks.
In January, Daniel was invited to perform Saint-Sæns’ Rondo Capriccioso with the Trent Chamber Orchestra, a highlight of his season. Alongside these engagements, he has also freelanced with several leading orchestras throughout the UK, including the English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, BBC Scottish Symphony, and Oxford Philharmonic, among many others. Daniel’s season has extended into the studio as well, where he has recorded film scores for major Disney films. Currently, he is touring Europe as the co-leader of the orchestra for Les Misérables: The World Arena Tour.
Upon graduating with Distinction in Master of Arts from the Royal Academy of Music in London, he was presented with the prestigious Regency Award for Outstanding Achievement, the DipRAM, and notably achieved the highest violin mark in his year for his final recital. Daniel also holds a First-Class honours degree, and won the James Wright award from the Royal Academy. He was a scholar at the Academy for both his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Daniel is winner of the 2022 Manoug Parikian Award from Help Musicians UK, and was recipient of the Harrison-Frank Family Foundation Award in 2022. He became a semi-finalist in the Royal Overseas League International Competition and won 2nd prize in the Royal Academy's Winifred Small Solo Violin Competition in 2021. While making solo debuts at the Petworth and Edinburgh Festivals, Daniel has also given chamber and orchestral performances at the Aldeburgh, BBC Proms, Hellensmusic and the Chipping Campden Festival.
Daniel studied under Michael Foyle and Ying Xue at the Royal Academy, and has received mentoring and guidance from esteemed violinists including James Ehnes, Tasmin Little, Roman Simovic, Levon Chilingirian and Eszter Haffner. Daniel had the privilege of playing a fine Nicoló Gagliano Violin from 1755, on generous loan for several years from the Academy's fine instrument collection.
Daniels passion for diverse musical genres extends beyond classical music. He has performed with artists including Ed Sheeran and RAYE, and lead a string recording session for Ella Henderson's acoustic single 'Heartstrings'. He has enjoyed composing, arranging and recording strings for artists like Carmody and Ella McRobb. Daniel was Deputy Leader for the West End show Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre London.
Daniel's musical journey began learning piano aged seven, and later, violin lessons at age ten at his local primary school in South Queensferry, Edinburgh. His talent and aptitude for music quickly blossomed, and at age fourteen, joined the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Junior Department, where he led all of the orchestras and won several awards. He later led the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.
